Originally founded in the 1960's by Spencer and Dorothy Hughes, Spendor grew out of the expertise gained in the BBC's sound engineering department. The original BC1 design became the studio monitor of choice and soon this and other designs were to be developed for the consumer market. For over 30 years a succession of distinctive and innovative products has set a reference standard for consumer and professional users. Many Spendor designs have earned international cult status amongst discerning audiophiles and sound engineers and the virtues of such classics as the Spendor BC1 and LS3/5a are embodied in today's products. | BC1, BC1A, BC1/3, BC1/69 | |
The BC1 was a 3-way bass reflex system intended to operate in a free-standing position. The BC1A included a built in 25 or 50 watt amplifier. The BC1/3 was a later revised version using a 38mm HF/mid driver and a 19mm SHF driver. The BC1/69 was a limited edition, luxury, upgraded anniversary edition based on the original specification. |
| BC2, BC2A | |
| The BC2 was similar to the BC1, but with higher power handling, and higher efficiency due to an increased voice coil diameter and magnet size LF driver. The BC2A included a built in 25 or 50 watt amplifier. | |
| BC3, BC3A | |
| The BC3 was a large 4 way speaker, using a 12 inch LF and 8 inch MR drivers, combined with the same HF1300 unit which was used in the BC1 and BC2. The BC3A included a built in 50 or 100 watt amplifier. | |

| LS3/5a | |
| The BBC designed LS3/5a was made by Spendor under license from the BBC and the units were selected to BBC specification to produce consistent close tolerance pairs. Click here for more information on the LS3/5a. | |

| SA1 | |
| The SA1 'mini monitor' combined a 6 inch Spendor LF driver with a 1 inch fabric dome HF driver in a compact, sealed enclosure. This was Spendor's first small loudspeaker. | |
| SA2, PRELUDE | |
| The SA2 was a reflex loaded cabinet, using an 8 inch LF driver based on the geometry of the BC2. This speaker used the same 1 inch HF driver as the SA1. The Prelude was an 'economy' version of the SA2, using a vinyl covering instead of wood veneer. | |
| SA3, SA3A | |
| The SA3 was a large 2 way design, utilising clever modifications to the BC3 12 inch LF driver to allow it to operate into the mid-band, requiring only a 38mm HF unit for full bandwidth. The SA3A was Spendor's first fully active, bi-amped design. | |
| SP1, SP1A | |
| The SP1 was the logical progression from previous designs. A highly evolved version of the 8 inch LF driver using homopolymer polypropylene cone material was combined with the tried and trusted HF1300/4001 HF drivers for excellent performance. | |
| SP2 | |
| The SP2 combined the size and topology of the previous SA2 with the advantages of the new polypropylene cone material. A new 19mm ferrofluid cooled HF driver completed the design. | |
| SP2/2, SP2/3, SA350 | |
| The SP2/2 added bi-wiring, a new higher quality frame for the LF driver and an upgraded version of the 19mm ferrofluid cooled HF driver. The SP2/3 was a similar but larger design. The SA350 added a 100 watt power amplifier for professional use. | |
| PRELUDE2, PRELUDE2/2 | |
| Even though the SP2 had replaced the SA2, the prelude continued as the prelude2, and was upgraded to real wood veneer for the wrap, but retained a black front and back for economy. The prelude 2/2 added the new driver frame and bi-wiring. | |
| SP1/2, SP1/2A | |
| With the HF1300 driver no longer available, the SP1 was redesigned. The SP1/2 featured a further modification to the 8 inch LF driver, a 38mm HF and 19mm SHF drivers. Bi-wiring was also featured on this model. An amplified version was available. | |
| S20, SA250, SP3/1 | |
| The S20 used the evolution version of the 6 inch LF driver featuring the homopolymer cone material, allied with a 19mm ferrofluid cooled HF driver in a sealed enclosure. The SP3/1 was a larger version of this model, the SA250 added a 100w amplifier. | |
| S100, SA1200 | |
| The award winning S100 was a sophisticated 3 way design incorporating the newest version of the 12 inch LF driver, together with a 6 inch MR and 19mm ferrofluid HF drivers. The SA1200 was a fully active version featuring three 100w amplifiers. | |
